AirMagnet
Inc.
AirMagnet® provides enterprise-hardened wireless LAN security and
management solutions that enable CIOs and IT staff to secure, manage and
troubleshoot all of their WLANs worldwide, on-site or remotely. The company
was founded in 2001, shipped its first products in April 2002 and in three
years' time amassed more than 4,500 customers. AirMagnet also counts over
75 Fortune 100 companies as customers.
AirMagnet solutions come in portable configurations for use by IT personnel,
as well as enterprise configurations that deliver comprehensive, 24x7
intrusion prevention for distributed wireless networks of any size or
scale. In thousands of deployments worldwide, customers consistently find
that AirMagnet solutions minimize security risks and legal exposure, maximize
performance and productivity, and optimize cost and IT staff resources
better than any other products in the industry.
AirMagnet solutions are engineered specifically to address the unique
needs of wireless networks. By addressing the entire cycle of WLAN deployment—from
site survey to security auditing, ongoing security and performance management
to expansion planning—AirMagnet products meet a critical need for
the wireless enterprise.
The Wireless Market
Wireless networks based on the 802.11b, 802.11a and 802.11g standards
are being implemented in ever-increasing numbers in corporations worldwide.
According to the Forrester Research, 60 percent of enterprises are upgrading
or deploying WLAN networks in 2005. Of those deployments, vendors are
reporting that average access points per deployment are doubling, from
75 to 150, resulting in larger networks to manage. IDC expects that the
enterprise segment will account for 69 percent of the total WLAN revenue
by 2005.
Vertical industry segments such as healthcare, manufacturing, retail,
education and automotive are incorporating wireless connectivity as a
critical part of getting business done. For instance, retail and manufacturing
companies are adopting Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) to streamline
distribution methods and assembly lines. In many cases, network downtime
could result in the loss of inventory and millions of dollars in revenue.
The growth of Wireless LANs in the enterprise is being driven by the increasing
availability of solutions and rapid decline in hardware costs, combined
with the wide appeal of increased mobility, flexibility and convenience
among enterprise end users. The inclination of enterprise end users to
deploy their own WLAN equipment without consulting IT managers or asking
their permission has contributed to an ad hoc , unmanaged proliferation
of Wi-Fi technology.
The price of ad hoc implementation is often a significant gap in a company's
network security. Non-technical employees who install Wi-Fi hardware without
the knowledge of IT often do not follow corporate security policies or
set up appropriate security protocols, creating network vulnerabilities
below the radar screen of the IT department. The emergence of new protocols
and authentication measures like TKIP, WPA, AES, Cisco's LEAP and 802.11i
promise to improve WLAN security, but will only be effective if they are
implemented universally. As WLAN s proliferate, this becomes an increasingly
difficult task. WLAN's viral growth not only affects network security,
but also impedes network performance and reliability. Any number of issues
indigenous to wireless environments—including channel interference,
bandwidth constraints and the introduction of unidentified Access Points
and Stations--can affect the performance and availability of WLANs.
Other network administration tools on the market today are "adapted
solutions" that help solve some of the problems in WLAN administration,
but were actually designed for the needs of wireline administration instead
of the wireless environment. None of these tools deliver a comprehensive
network administration solution that truly addresses the needs of network
and security administrators, leaving IT professionals ill-equipped to
deal with the rapid proliferation of WLANs in their environment.
More recently, a spate of wireless LAN "switch" vendors have
entered the market, touting monitoring, management and security functions
as features to differentiate themselves from other wireless LAN infrastructure
players. Connectivity is still their primary function, however, and their
solutions offer limited diagnostic capabilities that are not sufficient
to ensure a secure and reliable Wi-Fi environment. Historically, even
wired equipment vendors have been unable to deliver fully self-healing
or self-diagnosing systems. As a vendor-agnostic, third party overlay
designed to troubleshoot any wireless environment, AirMagnet's sole focus
is to provide a comprehensive solution to address every security or performance
issue that may arise on a wireless LAN. For a basic Access Point network,
WLAN “switch” architecture or mixed hardware environment,
AirMagnet Enterprise is the only method available to enforce comprehensive
wireless intrusion prevention.
The airmagnet solution
AirMagnet is the choice of security-conscious CIOs and IT managers for
enterprises with strategic, complex or critically important wireless infrastructures.
Whether the job calls for enterprise-wide wireless security, design and
installation of a new network, troubleshooting connections or optimizing
performance, AirMagnet products—both portable analyzers and Enterprise
wireless IPS—consistently meet all the needs of network and security
professionals
